Dom Pedro II, second and last head of the Empire of Brazil, died in exile in Paris on December 5, 1891, less than three years after his ouster in a military coup that declared Brazil a republic. He was given a state funeral in France before being taken to Portugal to be buried in the pantheon of the House of Braganza, the Portuguese royal family to which his father belonged. Thirty years later, near the one hundredth anniversary of Brazilian independence, Dom Pedro II’s remains were taken back to his homeland of Brazil were they were finally entombed in Rio de Janeiro.
